RON MIEL

The typical Canarian drink is Rum, in various aging, even with some fruity deviations such as “green manzana” or the “melocoton”, the most appetizing one? No doubt, the “Ron Miel”.

No, I am not already stoned, I was trying to imagine which elixir could help me to dissipate the great confusion that is already gripping me after taking notice of some announcements during the last few weeks.

The first was that by the WMRA, which has decided not to observe the sabbatical year that ITRA will instead take with the world trail champs, waiting for the big-bang of 2021 when the first IAAF mountain & trail running world championships will take place.

The WMRA has decided to celebrate its 2020 championships, and it will be in Lanzarote, here is explained my search for some strong Canarian Spirit, as I will need it for sure when in the evening of October 15th 2020 I will look at the photos of the world podiums and I won’t see Kilian on none of them.

To explain this sad preview it is necessary to take a step back to August 9, 2019 when in the Salle de Sport of Zinal, at the press conference before the race of the century, I asked the Catalan champion why we had never seen him at the Mountain Running World Championship.

The answer was natural in its simplicity, commentable, but absolutely legitimate and respectable. The undisputed number one of the off-road running does not recognize himself in a system that according to him it is “closed” and that imposes selections from nations and a limited number of athletes who can compete for the world title. For him also the world championship race must be open and whoever decides to run for the world championship should be able to present himself on the starting line without any impediment.

The press conference went on without any particular setbacks, I applied my “Greta Garbo” model and it went on smoothly, waiting for the show two days later, when the gods and records finally collapsed (tank Kiki for those magic memories, by the way).

The press conference story, however, helps me to note the other announcements of these recent days: first the amazing calendar of the Golden Trail Series, closely followed by those of the National Series.

France-Belgium, Italy, Spain-Portugal. These are at the moment the first 3 National Clones of the great Salomon world event, which present a smart system of “support” to those who will take part to the races and will be good enough to enter the top positions, this support will bring them to the great final of all GTNS,  scheduled for November 1st at the Azores Trail Run .

But it is not over, the top3 of the 2020 National-Series final will receive an invitation to three stages of the Golden Trail World Series 2021 .

I am officially confused, because i think they are similar.

If I am not wrong the traditional national system provides for (open) selection contests, the so-called national trials, to decide on which athletes to invest public resources to send them to run the world championship.

The GTS’ system, on the other hand, carries out these selections on a different and larger bases, but in fact it does the same when it selects from the various stages those who will have access to the Grand Final (be invited should mean that travel and accomodation costs are covered).

The real difference, today, it’s in the money-awards, and the real guilty of the story is clearly one and only: the world athletics federation,  but since these don’t want to be “money talks” I close it here, now.

Open …we said,  yes, though, bha, Maybe I didn’t understand, I’m confused, wait a moment..  it’s better if I drink a “Ron miel” … triple …
